2016 Salary Trends in Technology

2016 Salary Trends in Technology2016 Salary Trends in Technology2016 Salary Trends in Technology ConlanCompared with competitive salary trends in finance, healthcare and transportation, no industry can hold a candle to tech hiring, says Katie Bardaro, vice president of data analytics at PayScale. When it comes to IT jobs, theyre hiring like crazy and wages are rising like crazy, says Bardaro. And its not just at tech firms any geschftsleben that wants to recruit tech talent and hire for IT jobs is facing strong wage pressure. While that may sound daunting for many employers, there is some good news. Recruiting experts expect salary growth to remain hot, but it may actually slow slightly in 2016.Jonas Johnson, senior researcher at the Economic Research Institute, says his organizations salary expectation found that tech employers expect salaries to rise 3.2 percent compared to 2.9 percent over the past year. Here are the factors that will most impact salary trends in technology in the y ear ahead.Competition for Tech TalentWith everyone hiring for technology skills, theres simply a much larger demand than there is for the current supply. And its not just tech companies that are facing a crunch all tech skills are in demand across all industries. Its the key thing we talk to employers about, Bardaro says. Even if youre not a tech firm, if youre hiring tech workers, youre going to be facing competition from those firms for candidates. The key is understanding the market and competition for the industry youre in.William Uranga, director of technical and corporate recruiting for GoDaddy, says employers that are facing higher salary pressures because of a tight market can offer other benefits to qualified candidates. With more demand than supply for tech talent, weve learned salary is important, but a company has to have more than a great financial package, he says. Employers have to offer a open culture where women and men can thrive and where employees can make a differ ence, where they are recognized, promoted and part of a team.Job Location Go Where IT Talent LivesJob location is a big variable in successfully hiring tech workers, Uranga says. While GoDaddy is leise headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona, it has 14 offices around the world, including in technology hotspots such as Cambridge, MA, as well as Los Angeles and San Francisco. We adjust our base pay depending on the cost of living in a given location. In fact, we took the approach a couple years ago of going where the talent is. The company established a growing office in Kirkland, near Seattle, because it was such a strong center of tech talent.Evaluating Tech SkillsTech experience is another key factor when evaluating a candidate, Uranga says, but it can mean more than just the number of years in the industry. We look at the what and the how that come with a candidates experience, he says.In other words, looking at candidates focus, discipline or soft skills and how they go about getting good results often matters more than years of service.

American consumers are the most confident since 2007

American consumers are the most confident since 2007American consumers are the most confident since 2007American consumers are the most confident since 2007On Tuesday, September 27 theConference motherboard Consumer Confidence Index welches releasedbased on data collected through September 15. The headline number of 104.1 was an increase from the final reading of 101.8 for August, an upward revision from 101.1. This is the highest since August 2007 and reflects more optimism about the economy since the summer of 2007. Economists expected the Consumer Confidence Index to hit 99.0 in September.Consumer confidence increased in September for a second consecutive month and is now at its highest level since the recession, said Lynn Franco, Director of Economic Indicators at The Conference Board. Consumers assessment of present-day conditions improved, primarily the result of a more positive view of the labor market. Looking ahead, consumers are more upbeat about the short-term employment o utlook, but somewhat neutral about business conditions and income prospects. Overall, consumers continue to rate current conditions favorably and foresee moderate economic expansion in the months ahead.A larger share, 27.9 percent of those surveyed, felt that jobs were plentiful in September, up from 26.8 percent in the prior month. Those claiming jobs were hard to get declined to 21.6 percent, from 22.8 percent, The Conference Board said. The improved outlook reflects a healthier job market. The unemployment rate is 4.9%, less than half its peak of 10% during the recession. Millions of people have found jobs in the past several years and consumers are more upbeat about employment conditions.Consumer confidence for October 2016 was released on Tuesday, October 25, 2016. For the latest trend view the United States Consumer Confidence updated each month.Consumer confidence is a key measure of consumers attitudes. The survey, a closely followed barometer of consumer attitudes, measures c onfidence toward business conditions, short-term outlook, personal finances and jobs. In other words it measures the degree of optimism that consumers feel about the overall state of the economy and their personal financial situation. If consumer confidence is high, consumers are more likely to make purchases. Vice-versa, if consumer confidence is low, consumers are more likely to save and spend less.

Skill stacking A practical strategy to achieve career success

Skill stacking A practical strategy to achieve career successSkill stacking A practical strategy to achieve career successOne of the most popular ideas in personal development is that all successful people have achieved mastery. Many of us believe in this false notion that you have to master a skill to achieve career success.Thats because we, as a society, admire and glorify winners. We look at billionaires, champions, gold medalists, and other outliers. I must admit, there are many lessons we can learn from people who are masters at one particular skill. But at the same time, its very daunting. Lets be real, not everyone wants to spend 10 or 20 thousand hours to master a skill. We all have other things we value in life Our family, friends, hobbies, health, you name it.So when people write books and articles about outliers, we might get inspired, but from a practical point of view, the advice is useless. Not because we cant apply the advice - most of the time, we dont WANT to.A mora realistic approach to career successI always knew I wanted to live life on my own terms. My definition of success is the same as Bob DylansA man is a success if he gets up in the morning and goes to bed at night, and in between does what he wants to do.I realized that if you want to be successful according to that definition, you need two things A stable career and enough income. To be clear, you dont need to become the best in the world to be successful. Nor do you need to be a millionaire. All you need is a valuable skill set to achieve that level of career success.Build your skill stackAbout three years ago, I made a discovery that changed the course of my career and life. Ive been working many different jobs since I welches 17. I also studied business and marketing, getting a bachelors and a masters degree. In 2010, I departureed my first business.Over the years, Ive developed many skills. Heres how my skill stack looks likeProductivity and time-managementPersuasionWeb designWrit ingAccountingDrawingProject managementMarketingPublic speakingTeachingIm not a master at any of these skills. For example, I have poor drawing skills, reasonable web design skills, average marketing skills, solid productivity skills, and good but not great writing skills. But when I stacked all my skills on top of each other and started blogging, it proved to be a success. When I read How To Fail At Almost Everything and Still Win Big by Scott Adams, I understood why that was. He calls this concept Talent Stacking (I dont like the word talent because it implies nature, I prefer skill because it implies nurture), and writesSuccesswise, youre better off being good at two complementary skills than being excellent at one.Every skill you acquire doubles your odds of successScott Adams writesIf you think extraordinary talent and a maniacal pursuit of excellence are necessary for success, I say thats just one approach, and probably the hardest. When it comes to skills, quantity often beats q uality. There are many examples of this if you look around you. How many people do you know who are not the best in the world and yet are doing well? Its all about increasing your odds of success. You simply have more chance of career success if you have more skills. Think about it. If youre a one-trick pony, your opportunities are limited. But if you have multiple skills, youre simply more valuable. And thats what career success is ultimately about. It comes down to value. How much value can you give to people or organizations? What skills will make me more valuable? That brings us to the million-dollar question. To be clear, Im not just using popular language here. This is truly a million-dollar question. The more skills you have, and the more value you can create, the more rewards you receive. And yes, over your career, thats probably more than a million bucks. So what are those valuable skills? I personally think you cant go wrong by developing these skillsProductivity- My whole blog s focus is on productivity for one reason When youre a person who can get shit done, you will always find a way. With solid productivity skills, you can learn anything. Thats why I think its the first thing we must learn because it makes developing all the other skills a lot easier. Put simply Productivity is the mother of all skills.Writing- The ability to translate your thoughts into words makes it easier to do our job. When you write in a clear and simple way, you can express yourself like very few people can.Psychology- A basic understanding of why we do what we do can help us to understand ourselves and others. You dont have to become a therapist. As long as you know the basics of psychology, youre better at dealing with other people and yourself.Persuasion- This is the art and science of communicating in a way that resonates with people. When were good at persuasion, we are better at leadership, sales, holding conversations, public speaking, at anything else that requires i nfluencing others. Influence is more about effective communication than anything else.Personal Finance- We often dont think about managing our money. But when we get closer to retirement, we think, Why didnt I start earlier. The time to start managing your personal finance is NOW.I have a strong belief that acquiring these skills will turn you into a reliable human being. Someone you want to be your spouse, brother, sister, parent, etc. (If you want to hear more thoughts on this, listen to my podcast episode about it)Lets do the following thought exercise. Lets say you own a business and you want to hire a CEO. What kind of person would you hire?Answer that question for yourself. Write down what skills and qualities that person should have. Then, become that person by acquiring those skills.Thisarticlefirst appeared onDariusForoux.com.

How I started my independent podcast

How I started my independent podcastHow I started my independent podcastI recently received a side hustle style career conundrum from Rachel from Minneapolis on the Bossed Up podcast hotline, who wants to know how to start her own podcast. So todays post is all about my jurney to launching and growing the Bossed Up podcast as an independent show over the last year and everything Ive learned along the way.Know Your GoalsFollow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and morePodcasting has been calledthe new blogging, for how its become an efficient way to communicate regularly with people who share your areas of interest. And while I love podcasting, keep in mind only about36%of the US population has ever listened to a podcast, so it might leid be the right channel for everyone. The way I look at podcasting is that it compliments the writing I do on the Bossed Upblog, the news I send out via our email list, and thecommunityweve created on social media. However, you approach podcasting, make sure youre clear about your goals and enjoy the process. Its not easy to make any money at all through podcasting (although Ill share some best practices for doing so at the end of todays post), so I encourage you to get crystal clear about your goals before venturing into this process. For me, I got lucky. I welches recruited into the podcasting world when Cristen Conger and Caroline Ervin stepped down from their post at the HowStuffWorks network, where they created and co-hostedStuff Mom Never Told You. After 8 years, Cristen and Caroline left to start their own independent show,Unladylike. At the time, I was able to negotiate a great deal for myself, recommend my best possible collaborator (Bridget Todd), and had the pleasure of co-hosting Stuff Mom Never Told You for the 9 months we had together. But when management changed at the network and our deal fell apart, I wasnt willing to work for just over a third of what theyd initially been paying us, so I left.I knew, however, that just because I was leaving Stuff Mom Never Told You didnt mean I wanted to leave the world of podcasting altogether. Over those 9 months Id grown to love the creative challenge and the conversations we were able to start with listeners including many of you I didnt want to work with a network that treated its workers incredibly poorly, so I platzset out on the intimidating undertaking of launching my own independent production instead.Establish Your ConceptThink about it what could you talk abouta LOT? Obviously, youre going to want to have a focus to your show, but nottoonarrow a subject matter that youll run out of things to say.Would you want a co-host? Or not? Co-hosts can make a show wonderfully dynamic, but also requires a lot more back-end planning, communication, and logistics.Would you want to produce podcast series like a limited release of 5-10 geschehens all at once? Or a more ong oing, weekly format? Many creators find the series format to be more freeing, in that theyre able to build in breaks and not get overwhelmed with deadlines, but after 9 months of producing 2 episodes a week with Stuff Mom Never Told You, I was confident in my abilities to opt for the weekly format instead.Establishing your concept is a fun and creative endeavor, but dont forget to consider production complexities. For instance, I love ending each Tuesday episode of the Bossed Up podcast by featuring a listener-submitted boss move Its an inspiring and uplifting way to showcase our community. But, if Im being honest with you, its made our production process kind of challenging, because we constantly have to persuade our listeners to call in and brag on themselves which is not the easiest thing to do. In fact, there was one episode in which we didnt have boss moves to share So when coming up with fun, creative concepts like this one, keep in mind how much effort it might take to actua lly make it happen.Another reason I love featuring listener-submitted boss movesandcareer conundrums is because its important to think about how your show will incorporate vocal diversity. Listening to one persons soliloquy can get, well, boring. So when I set out to start this podcastwithouta co-host, I knew it was going to be important to feature interviews and listener voicemails to add to the vocal diversity in each episode. Finally, when thinking about how youll set up each episode, my friendGretta Cohn, who is the Founder ofTransmitter Media, gave me this advice when I just starting out think insegments. Whats your first segment of each episode going to sound like? Whats your middle segment? What are recurring segments you can bring in every now and then to surprise your listeners? What will your closing segment always involve? Listeners like recognizable patterns, so consider segments your building blocks for creating each episode.Equipment SoftwareWhen it comes to equipment, theres a wide spectrum of audio devices you can use, but you really dont need pro-level stuff to produce a great-sounding podcast. Dont get me wrong, audio quality matters, but it doesnt take a pricey mic to make it a reality. I know Myleik Teele of theMyTaughtYoupodcast uses a simple handheld mic with a USB output that plugs right into her computer. Heres a link tosome great mic optionsfrom The Podcast Host at all different price ranges for you to consider.A few more optional pieces of equipment that can take your microphone game to the next level include snagginga mic standand/orboom arm, which help hold the microphone for you, anda pop filterwhich is a little screen that softens some of the harsher, fricative sounds in human speech.Youll also need software to capture your audio as you record it. I like to useZencastr, an online tafelgeschirr that costs me about $20 a month, and can record my audioandmy interview guests audio on two separate tracks, which is important for editing purposes. You can also edit your files straight in the Zencastr platform, but I pay an audio editor who uses more sophisticated Adobe software instead. There are lots of options for capturing your audio files. You can useAudacityorGarageBand, which cost nothing. You can useZoomorSkypeas well. Whichever software you opt for, remember it always takes a little fiddling and experimentation to figure it out at first. You can often google you way to tutorials online specific to whichever audio platform you use.Personally, I especially appreciate the fact that by paying for Zencastr, that $20 a month also includes customer service and troubleshooting, which has saved me a bunch of time when Ive run into technical challenges.Editing Your AudioOnce you capture your audio files, youve got put all your segments together in one final .mp3 or .wav file thats ready to be listened to. But heres the thing when I started podcasting on the HowStuffWorks network, they had in-house audio engineers who w ould do all that editing for me.When I transitioned into hosting my own independent production, I knew that my time and talents were best spent focusing on content creation, not editing audio files. This can be extremely detail-oriented and time-consuming work, so I did a lot of research interviewing a bunch of different editors to work with as an investment in the show. All that research led me to Josh atPodcastGuyMedia, whos been an absolute delight to work with. If its at all possible for you to outsource your editing, I cant recommend Josh enough. In fact, when we put this episode together, Josh kindly offered a discount to any of you who reach out to him via http//podcastguymedia.com/bossedup. Hes offering 25% off the first month of editing and/or 1 hr..That said, I also know plenty of podcasters, includingKathlyn Hartof theKathlyn Hart Show, who do their own editing. Its definitely a skill you can learn, and I recommend these more in-depth tutorials from Pat Flynn atpodcastingtu torial.comto learn more.Publish Your PodcastNow, once youve edited your final podcast file and youre happy with how it all came together, you need a hosting service to publish your show.I useSimplecast, a hosting platform that costs me $12 a month, to upload the raw audio file (in a .wav or .mp3 format), and then add metadata.Metadata in behind-the-scenes information thats associated with each episode, including the title, any related tags or search terms, and both a one-line description and a more detailed description with show notes. By adding this metadata to the hosting platform, Simplecast then communicates all that information via an RSS feed to Apple Podcasts, Spotify, GooglePlay, Stitcher Radio, and all the other places where you get your podcasts.I also like Simplecast, because it allows me to embed a little player widget into every Bossed Up blog post that features my podcast. That way, I can share a link to my blog on social media to encourage people to listen to the show , instead of linking directly to iTunes or any single podcast player.MonetizationOnce you can prove that your podcast reaches a good deal of people (typically 2500 downloads per episode is the minimum), which you can measure using a hosting platform like Simplecast, advertisers might be interested in partnering with you. There are 3 ways Ive seen this doneYou can sell ads yourself. This is somethingI do offerand have gotten a little bit of interest that way, but not much. I set flat rates for my ads, make sure the advertiser is peddling something I truly love and think youd love too, and then my assistant Kirby and I write a script to show what I plan to say for their pre-approval.Work with an agency. These are third-party businesses that work more closely with bigger brands and companies and offer up advertising on a variety of podcasts. They typically earn a percentage of your ad revenue (around 30% is common) and send you advertisers on the regular. I recently started working withTr ueNative Mediain this capacity and appreciate how they manage the process with advertisers for me.You can pitch your show to a network. This is probably the hardest path forward because you have to convince a major media network that your show should be one of their family of shows, via a proposal. This is also my least favorite / least recommended path because the podcast network landscape is currently very volatile and somewhat unpredictable. However,if youre fortunate enough to get past all that, you can make some bigger bucks going this route, as networks take an active role in helping all their shows grow especially through cross-promotion on other network shows and they take a very hands-on role in managing advertisers and production for you.Whichever route you pursue, know that you should always retain the right tonot work with any advertiser you dont like.Ive turned down offers from Modcloth ever since they were bought out by Walmart, a company I have major ethical concerns about. Ive passed on advertisers whose products are confusing or just dont seem all that valuable to me, so I wouldnt want to recommend. And Ive passed on offers to peddle skinny tea and other products I find overtly harmful and contrary to my personal values.More ResourcesI hope this longer-than-usual post has given you some helpful first steps to take when pursuing your own podcast, but for even more beistand, check out this awesome book,So You Want to Start A Podcast? which I recently stumbled upon byKristen Meinzer, one of the women behind the awesomeBy the Bookpodcast.I also recommend attending the annualWERK IT Womens Podcasting Festival, hosted byWNYC Studios, and tuning in to theirpodcast of the same name, which includes live recordings of all the main stage presentations from the festival. You might even stumble uponmy talkfrom a few years back when I delivered a talk that goes into greater detail about how to make money through podcasting. My last recommendation is to subscr ibe toHot Pod, the best podcast industry newsletter out there, written by Nick Quah, with whom I share a book editor. My editor at Hachette, Colleen, who you heard on the Bossed Up podcast about how I got my book deal, is currently editing Nicks forthcoming book all about the podcast industry. His newsletter is great for keeping up with all the mergers and acquisitions happening in the still-pubescent podcasting media industry. What other podcast questions do you have?Id love to hear from you What are you still left wondering after reading todays post? 5 Ways Employers Can Relieve Employee Stress - Spark Hire

5 Ways Employers Can Relieve Employee Stress - Spark HireYou often hear that its tough at the top. Theres mora pressure to produce results and if something goes awry, youre to blame. That may be true, but if youve ever been at the bottom of the rung (and most everyone has) then you know about employee stress all too well. In fact, a recent study by Harvards Kennedy School Professor Jennifer Lerner and associates found that bosses have less stress than those under them. This may be surprising to some, but common knowledge to others. After all, its the bosses that have the most control of their schedules and tasks. So as employers, what are some simple things we can do to relieve some of the employee stress that may be rampant in the amtsstube? The office can be a very stressful place. There are always goals to be met and work that has to be done. On top of that, if you have successfully created a diverse atmosphere in your workplace then there are going to be many different people inte racting with each other. Essentially, the office has the potential to be one of the most stressful places in our day to day lives. So lets take a look at 5 things you can do to make your office more relaxed and relieve employee stress.Keep an Organized, Clean SpaceSure, there will be some days where the office is a mess. Especially if you are in the process of adding employees on or moving work spaces around. The office shouldnt be disheveled every day though. Piles of empty boxes along the wall, a dirty bathroom and heaping garbage cans can easily increase employee stress levels. Stressed employees do not usually make productive employees. Therefore, keep a neat and tidy office and your employees will likely be more relaxed.Prevent exhaustionYou have a team of hardworking employees that always meet their deadlines. Thats great But are they skipping lunch or their breaks in order to meet your demands? This is a fast track to employee stress. As the employer or manager, be sure that you are encouraging your employees to take their breaks. Working hard is great, but burnout leads to decreased productivity levels and very unhappy employees. Are you the type that questions where your employees were if their phone went unanswered? Your employees cannot be chained to their desk or chained to their phone either. Be sure you are encouraging your employees to take breaks and their stress levels will be kept low and their productivity levels high.ListenA while back Spark Hire discussed how you can listen your way to a better company culture. Listening to your employees can do wonders. That means actually listening to them and understanding what they are saying- not just nodding your head and hearing them. Any employer can hear, but it takes a good one to actually listen. If you are attuned to your employees and listen to what they have to say then chances are you will have a stronger, more trusting relationship. Not being able to trust your employer can certainly give w ay to large amounts of stress. Listen your way to a stress-free work environment for you and your employees.Etch Out Time for FunThis isnt to say that at 4 p.m. everyone in the office should go outside for 20 minutes of soccer or frisbee, but employees that can have fun and joke around likely arent experiencing high levels of stress everyday. When you establish a fun atmosphere and a sturdy company culture, your employees will be happier and more comfortable. If your company culture is sterile and all employees are expected to simply get their work done and thats it, that may be fine. However you need to make sure you are hiring workers that fit that company culture. That is why hiring for fit is so important. When you screen candidates using video interviews, you can hire much faster for fit and weed out those that dont fit into your company culture. That way you decrease employee stress- and increase productivity.Reprimand in PrivateIf youre the type that the calls your employees out on their mistakes in front of everyone else, chances are you are managing a highly stressful office. When you reprimand your employees or team members in public for everyone to see, no one is ever going to want to make a mistake for fear of being embarrassed and ridiculed in front of everyone. This can lead to large amounts of stress among your employees. To prevent unnecessary stress-inducers, talk to your employees about their mistakes or missteps one-on-one in private. No one is perfect and everyone makes mistakes here and there. What matters is how you choose to deal with those mistakes. Keep it private and keep the employee stress levels down in the office.IMAGE Courtesy of Flickr by topgold

Turn off notifications and tischset specification times to check it.Getting caught up in other things while attempting to be productive can take a toll on you.Ariely argues that there is a high cost of interruption, namely, that there is a time cost, performance cost and one on stress/emotional well-being.He realized that with no way do determine how important emails arebased on a ping sound alone, we spend a lot of time and energy on messages that we might not need to focus on immediately.Arielyasked people to look at the last 40 emails that came their way, and askedthem when they needed to have seen the information in them, according to his blog post.He found that 7% hadto be seen within an hour, 4% at some point during a four hour period, 17% by the end of the day, 10% by the end of the week, and 15% at some point. But heres the kicker apparently, 34% didnt need to be seen at all. He also found that just 12% of received emails needed to be seen within the first five minutes. This is the worst part of emails they have the power to throw off your mood. Getting interrupted at work constantly can negatively impact your physical and mental health, and thats all email does. Our data suggests that people compensate for interruptions by working faster, but this comes at a price experiencing more stress, higher frustration, time pressure and effort, according to a study by researchers Humboldt University in Berlin and the University of California, Irvine. Is that email worth the trouble of stopping what youre doing? Probably not. Turn off your inbox if you want to focus at work, and check email later.Sort by senderAriely thinks we should weigh the importance of each email. The first thing we should question is this idea that all emails are created equal. Should each email be able to interrupt people? Is the email from someones boss as important as the weekly industry newsletter hes signed up for? What if we designed a different system in which emails were not treated equally? Ariely wrote in a blog post.So he came up with a solutiona method of sorting emails based on the sender. In other words, depending on the sender, emails could be set to be received at different intervals. He helped create anapp calledFiltr, and found that just like in his prior research, people sorted their emails according to who sent them.He wrote that just 23% were set up with the immediate label,10% every-4-hours,19% the end of the day, 16% to the end of the week, 5% to some day and 27% had thenever label. This is one way to take control of your email.According to The Atlantic, Ariely has also helped create a web app called Shortwhale, whichlets you tell senders how you like to get your emails.Unsubscribe or FilterThe key to fighting email, Ariely says, is to reduce distractions. Fewer emails mean fewer distractions. If you get daily status updates, newsletters or even sales offers, consider either unsubscribing or filtering them into folders you can check later.Archive everything to empty your inboxFollowing Arielys theories, your inbox has a strong effect on your wellbeing. You can clear it out and keep only the emails you need to act on. The secret? Select everything you dont immediately need, and hit archive on your email client. All your old email will still be searchable, but it wont be staring you in the face and dragging you into past conversations.

QA With Jolen Anderson, Visas Chief Diversity Officer - The Muse

QA With Jolen Anderson, Visas Chief Diversity Officer - The MuseQA With Jolen Anderson, Visas Chief Diversity Officer Jolen Anderson likes to call herself an attorney by training and an HR and diversity professional by passion. And despite naturally leaning introverted, she also calls herself a self-taught extrovert, in part thanks to her career. Before joining Visa in 2005, Anderson worked on labor and employment matters at a law firm in Chicago. And before she was Visas first Chief Diversity Officer, she worked in their legal department, most recently as Chief Counsel, Employment and Corporate Responsibility (she still maintains this role in addition to leading diversity and inclusion efforts). We sat down with Anderson to learn mora about her day-to-day routine (and gather some fun facts about her working style).Lets start easy What time do you go to bed and wake up?Way too late and not early enough, respectivelyOpen your desk drawer right now- whats in it?I work in a collaborative, open workspace- I have no desk drawer But if I did, you would find Post-it notes with my to-do list. How do you pass the time during your commute?Catching up with friends and family or listening to audiobooks. With a busy work schedule and three young kids at home, its some of my best quiet time of the day. What advice would you give your younger self? When opportunity knocks, open the door. As much as I have said yes to different opportunities, Ive definitely had moments where I was thinking, What did I just do? How am I going to approach this? Am I going to be successful? When I moved from my role in legal to becoming Chief Diversity Officer, I just dove into it, given my belief in what this position means for an organization. I consumed as much information as possible, reviewed the latest trends, and tapped into my network for insight and advice- and I figured it out. When an opportunity presents itself- even if the timing isnt perfect, or if you dont feel ready- trust in yourself and your abilities and have the confidence to go for it. Give us your definition of diversity and inclusion.I believe diversity and inclusion is about bringing together people who have different qualities, perspectives, and life experiences and inviting them to proudly display their differences so that everyone can feel comfortable and confident that they belong. What does that look like at Visa?I promote strategies and initiatives that help ensure theres diverse representation among employees and our working environment allows individuals to bring their authentic selves to work. My gruppe and I created the Visa Elevate Program to encourage professional growth of people of color within our company by providing career advancement strategies, exposure to senior leaders, and a platform to better recruit, retain, and promote diverse leaders. For the past two years, weve offered a Ready to Return program in Silicon Valley to create opportunities for those returning to the workforce after taking an extended period of time away to address family needs. And my team has provided inclusive leadership and unconscious bias training for all people managers across our offices to help identify and elevate awareness of bias and stereotypes. By creating an inclusive culture where all employees can thrive, were able to get the best out of our people. Whats one thing people dont understand about being a chief diversity officer?People are often surprised to learn that the role of a chief diversity officer doesnt just include a focus on issues involving race and gender. My job encompasses so much more than that. I focus on observing workplace and cultural behaviors and implementing strategies to shift the way we think, act, collaborate, and lead.Whats the biggest challenge of your role? The biggest reward? The biggest challenge about working in my role is that the work is never done. There will always be more to do when it comes to creating a more diverse and inclusive workplace an d world. The biggest reward is seeing the work we do effect real change- watching diversity and inclusion scores rise on our employee survey, witnessing the organization publicly commit to equal pay, and hearing the stories of candidates who found their dream job through one of our programs or employees who feel that their uniqueness is celebrated inside the company. But its also the day-to-day moments that stand out. I often say that if we can unlock one aha moment for someone or inspire them to think or act differently to ensure everyone feels included at our company, then thats definitely a measure of success.
